Petroleum and Natural Gas
Petroleum is a naturally originating liquid found beneath the earth’s surface that can be refined into fuel. Petroleum is a fossil fuel, meaning that it has been created by the decomposition of organic matter over millions of years. Petroleum is formed when large quantities of dead organisms–primarily zooplankton and algae–underneath sedimentary rock are subjected to intense heat and pressure.
Petroleum is extracted by oil drilling. After it has been recovered, it is refined and separated. It is most commonly refined into different types of fuels. Petroleum have hydrocarbons of different molecular weights. In general condition , the denser the petroleum the more difficult it is to process and the less valuable it is.
Natural gas (also called fossil gas; sometimes just gas), is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but including varying amounts of other higher alkanes, and sometimes a low percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, or helium.
